Kastanea is surrounded by an outstanding natural environment created by dense forests and crystal springs. Built in the 11th century, the stone buildings are harmonised with the natural environment, and due to the quality of the local stones the work of craftsmen is exquisitely preserved. Imposing mansions with beautifully decorated fireplaces and woodcarving ceilings, stone cobbled paths, numerous bridges, public and religious buildings demonstrate the virtuosity of the local craftsmen, that brought wealth in this remote village.
